“too blessed to be stressed”
It’s a popular phrase among a lot of us today. To be honest, I dislike that saying.
To begin, it gives a negative connotation to the word, ‘stressed’. Of course, I’m not saying “stress” is a happy and positive word, however the phrase makes it seem like you are not allowed to be stressed at all times; rather you should find ways to be unstressed, for you are blessed abundantly. Although counting blessings should be an essential in our lives, they do not necessarily provide remedies to our daily struggles.
When you are stressed out, chances are something isn’t going right according to your standard. Maybe stress is a good indication for you to step back and look at it with another look. Often times, it’s our lack of ability to see through Father’s eyes that really hurts us.
So instead of saying: “I’m too blessed to be stressed” then turn on your “happy switch” while counting all your blessings (not that it’s wrong), say: “I’m really stressed out because of so and so. But with God’s providence, I will gain wisdom and knowledge to overcome this mountain, for the greater glory of God.
My perspective says this: stress is a part of struggles that we face in our journey of faith. Rather than “taboo”ing it or eagerly getting rid of it in our lives, it’s important for us to embrace it. For Christ Himself says, “whoever wishes to follow me, must take up his own cross”. In parallel , our earthly challenges (be it stress, worries, fear, hardships, you name it) are part of God’s gifts which we often reject or try to avoid. If we are to truly follow Christ’s footsteps, we are to accept our daily crosses and see them as blessings.
If you say that phrase a lot or have done so in the past (I’m guilty of it too), my intention isn’t to bring you down or make you feel bad. Maybe, I’m writing this in hopes of you to look at that phrase with a fresh perspective.
Maybe rather than saying “too blessed to be stressed”, say: “too blessed with a cross”.
